1-Day Workshop on Saturday, March 30th, 2013

Hotlips Pizza and Soda ( Events Room )
2211 SE Hawthorne Blvd Portland, OR 97214
"In this fun and easy class you will learn how to sew and age your own monster rag dolls using a mix of new and recycled fabrics and buttons. I encourage using second hand and vintage pieces along with new because old bits add a unique charm.
These quirky dolls are made from free from cutting and assembly and it is in this way of sewing that each doll becomes one-of-a-kind, with a distinct personality! I will guide you through the fun step-by-step process of creating your own monster doll. From fabric combination, stuffing, "hairstyling “basic staining,” and aging (optional).
Class Includes:
Voodoo Doughnuts & Coffee
Non-alcoholic beverages throughout the class

Complimentary lunch on site. Hotlips Pizza and Soda offers a fresh, local and seasonal menu. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options are available.

Junker Jane parting gift

SCHEDULE:
  • Arrive & Mingle: 8:30: Time for students to arrive and mingle. Complimentary Voodoo Doughnuts and coffee.
  • Class Segment A: 9:00-12:00 :: Begin Class. Demonstrate and guide through steps and technique.
  • Lunch: 12:00 PM : Complimentary lunch on site. Hotlips Pizza and Soda offers a fresh, local and seasonal menu. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options are available
  • Class Segment B: 1:30-4:00 PM;
  • Show & Tell, Depart: 4:00-5:00 PM
STUDENTS SHOULD BRING:
  • Sewing machine Required. (Must have full understanding of how  to operate your machine)
  • Needles: Hand sewing needles and embroidery needles, extra sewing machine needle
  • Fabric scissors
  • Sewing thread: black is required, but add your fave colors as well to complement your fabrics
  • Fabric for doll bodies. I have found that cotton fabrics work best for staining. Bring a mix of colors and patterns. Stripes and polka dots always add a punch!
  • Doll face fabric: any unbleached linen or linen blend fabric is ideal
  • Assorted laces and ribbons
  • Assorted buttons, mixed match is better!
  • Stuffed animal safety eyes and noses if you wish
  • Embroidery floss: I recommend black, pink and pale blue for usual doll face details, but also bring a variety of colors you love or that match your fabrics. These will be used for sewing details on the dolls and for the hair
  • Polyfil: A 12-ounce bag will be more than plenty
  • Stuffing tool: A knitting needle works well. I will sometimes use long paintbrushes or pencils.
TEACHER WILL PROVIDE
  • Stain to dye the dolls
Tip: Have fun picking out your fabrics and trims. This includes colors and textures. There are no set "matching" rules. Just bring what you love and you will see that by pairing unexpected combinations and textures, your works will pop!

*Due to limited class size, registration for this class is non-refundable.
*Deadline for registration:  March 28th 2013

      Pop on Love 2011
POP LOVE 2011
                           November 11 - December 31, 2011

Opening reception: Saturday, December 31, 6:00

                       CLOSING Reception Dec 31st 6:00pm

Show opens softly, show hung, staff love, no party...on 11-11-11, because the date like LOVE only happens once in a life time. Closing reception rings in the New Year on the 31st.

Love is any of a number of emotions and experiences related to a sense of strong affection and attachment. The word love can refer to a variety of different feelings, states, and attitudes, ranging from generic pleasure ("I loved that meal") to intense interpersonal attraction ("I love my boyfriend"). This diversity of uses and meanings, combined with the complexity of the feelings involved, makes love unusually difficult to consistently define, even compared to other emotional states. Love in death, love in life, scorned lover, lover's revenge, love until death do us part, love and then you die--all phrases/comments on love and the immense role it plays in life, dealings, thoughts, after thoughts, actions, evolution and demise.

As an abstract concept, love usually refers to a deep, ineffable feeling of tenderly caring for another person. Even this limited conception of love, however, encompasses a wealth of different feelings, from the passionate desire and intimacy of romantic love to the nonsexual emotional closeness of familial and platonic love to the profound oneness or devotion of religious love. Love in its various forms acts as a major facilitator of interpersonal relationships and, owing to its central psychological importance, is one of the most common themes in the creative arts.
Introducing David Ho, Paul Barnes, Dan Barry, Sheri Debow, Ryan Myers, Lea Barozzi, Phresha Le Vandale, Kamila Mlynarczyk, Michele Lynch, Keely Benkey and Chris Erickson among others.

"Little Things 11"
November 25 - December 26

This will be the 11th year of the ever-popular Little Things Show. Now a tradition, it hard to remember a holiday season here at the gallery without it. The concept is easy: 45 artists were given the assignment of creating "Little" artwork. No restrictions, as long it was 7" X 7" or under (including frame & stands).

The show is geared to holiday sales. The buyer will be able to carry their artwork out at the time of purchase. The show you see on the first day will not be the same show on the last day, as artists bring in new work or simply sell out as the show progresses. This is a great opportunity to "Give the Gift of Art" at affordable prices by local artists as holiday presents or to decorate your own special corner or cubbyhole (that "little" spot in your home). A wide variety of mediums will be represented: silverpoint, paintings, clay, blown glass, enameled metal, resin, encaustic, metal, wood, photography, fiber art and mixed media

The 5th Annual Day of the Dead show

October 27-November 20

This will be the fifth annual “Day of the Dead” event here at the gallery. Twenty-two artists have created artwork especially for this show. Curated by Stephanie Brockway, the selected artists have used their imagination to commemorate ancestors and departed loved ones from whimsical, political, to painfully personal.

They have made this ancient ritual their own and reclaimed it in contemporary times. The Feature Area and the Window Gallery will be filled with and incredible range of art. For an example, a small suitcase is filled with an assemblage of Frida Kahlo memorabilia, a Muddy Water’s coffin comments on his death, small altars and shrines explore the theme of honoring those who have passed on. The event is an excuse to explore death and de-mystify the fear of darkness and celebrate the act of remembrance and love.

Participating arts are: Carol Arian, Robin Bachtler-Cushman, Stephanie Brockway, Tory Brokenshire, Scot Cameron-Bell, Barb Campbell, Greg Carrigan, Javier Cervantes, Richard Cutshall, Gene Flores, Mar Gomam, Janet Julian, Lisa Kaser, Kim Murton, Tabor Porter, Rachael Rice, Ron Rogers, Dick Speck, Gloria Sowell, Judy Wise, Cathie Joy Young and Catherine Zacchino (Junker Jane).

  2011 MF Toys Show 11/12 - 12/18
Every year, MF Gallery selects the best Art Toys for the annual "MF Toys Show". Because of their love of toys, curators Martina and Frank Russo have been putting together this show since 2003- long before Designer Toys were in the mainstream.

The MF Toys Show focuses on toys that are 100% hand made by artists, not painted vinyl or customized toys. These toys are made of materials such as cast resin, clay, fabric, animal bones, paper, wood and more. All of the pieces in this show are one-of-a-kind originals, making them very sought after collectibles. Some of the artists are toy makers, others were asked to create a toy especially for this show.

Artists include: Drew Maillard, Esther Vershoor, Moses Jaen, Bianca Panzram, Christine Benjamin, Max Reinhart, Jade Perez, Carisa Swenson, John Weisgerber, Sheri Debow, Scott Garrett, Jacqui Gallant, Peggy Wauters, Jaz Harold, Nicole Johnson, Nate Groppe, Junker Jane, Kamila Mlynarcz, Greg Maillard, Sigal Inbar, Heather Gargon, MF Toys and more!
